Overview of KetoFast By Dr. Joseph Mercola
In KetoFast, Dr. Joseph Mercola dives deep into the implementation of a cyclical ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting, and makes several recommendations on how best to optimize this programme.
In addition, the term “KetoFast” was used by the author to differentiate this method of fasting from other kinds of fasting. According to Dr. Mercola, the emphasis of implementing a KetoFast programme is to maximize the production of ketone whilst also minimizing muscle loss.
Lastly, the book touches on a lot of fundamentals of the keto diet and intermittent fasting and shares a number of recommendations for getting the most results from this programme. One of the recommendations shared in the book is the idea of not taking food at least 3 hours before you sleep.
Some of my takeaways from the book are:
I. Avoid taking food in the last 3 hours before going to bed. You are only allowed to hydrate yourself, but don’t take any food or even snacks. The author mentions a lot of scientific studies that backs up why this rule is one of the most important steps to improving your health and overall wellbeing.
II. Don’t go on a prolonged calorie restriction programme or a long-term keto diet. The author recommends the idea of introducing healthy interruptions into your fasting/dieting cycles. The idea is to ensure that your body doesn’t shift into starvation mode, which might slow down your metabolism.
III. Why you should practice regular one-day fasts to help you burn fat fast and detox, while freeing yourself from unhealthy food cravings and minimizing potential side effects.
IV. The practical ways of monitoring your progress with lab tests.
Bonus: KetoFast Cookbook
The KetoFast book comes with a bonus recipe book called the KetoFast Cookbook which was co-authored by the famous Australian chef Pete Evans. The cookbook contains recipes which provide between 300 to 600 calories per day.

In the last decade alone, there have been countless scientific studies that have established the remarkable benefits of fasting. However, it’s important to remember that there is no perfect approach to fasting.
There are several methods and strategies out there which are usually based on people’s personal preference, health situation, and intended goals.
